The mortgage loan process
Days 1 through 5: Application
You’ve decided upon a loan program, and now you’re ready to complete a loan application with the help of your lender. To complete this application, you will need to be prepared to provide a substantial amount of financial information.
Use the Mortgage Loan Application Checklist (pdf) to prepare for your loan application meeting. This checklist details the documents and information commonly required by lenders. Gather the items and information listed before you visit your lender to apply for your loan. If you have already met with a lender to prequalify for financing, you may have given them some of this information. Even so, bring the documents with you again when you go back to apply for your mortgage.
Be sure to bring both your original documents and copies to your meeting with your lender. That way, each of you will have a copy for your reference.
Once you have completed the loan application, the lender will verify, or confirm, all of the information you provide. This process, which is very thorough, takes approximately four weeks to complete.
